In this room you can find a plethora of indie, alternative, jangle, shoe-gaze and practically anything considered as alternative in music...
Back in the early eighties and, owing much of my music taste to listening to John Peel's radio programmes, I got into bands like The Fall and The Pixies and Sonic Youth, who all became mainstays in my life back then and forever more...
As this website builds I will add more and more mixes, for now though, there are four uploaded and ready for listening...
WHITEWASH YOUR WINDOWS
The story to this goes that some time in the mid-eighties and with me in my mid-twenties I came by a cassette tape while in Germany and on one side was written "Stations Of The Crass" and "Penis Envy" on the other. I had only vaguely heard of the band Crass but soon became a firm favourite of their work and was rather transfixed by what sounds there were on "Penis Envy" which didn't turn out to be that at all I was to discover many years later. It was someone's mix of other related material, namely the Bad News EP and selected tracks from the Bullshit Detector series. These turned out to be from Volume 2 and I'm pleased to say I have all four volumes finally.
What I have tried to do here is recreate the tracks in the order that they were first on the tape, obviously I have no idea whose tape it was, it was "found" in a suitcase some time, somewhere, but I am very grateful to whoever it was nonetheless!
The fascinating sounds like the man clearly being tortured in the opening gambit "Voice of the UK" and the soundclips of Margaret Thatcher and the three Hit Parade songs about the Mayes Prison and the troubles of Northern Ireland are all thankfully relived here...
"WHAT DO YOU FIND IN A BELFAST PRISON? THOSE WHO FIGHT AGAINST THE SYSTEM"
More recently someone else has remade "Random Relations" to bring it up to date but of course many of the factors spoken about have changed dramatically across twenty or more years and while wonderfully done, you really can't beat the original words here...
The Youth Employment Officer, he calls you a slob
Gets you to work in Woolworths
Some fucking job!
You get your Giro Friday
The rest of the week you sleep
You can't afford to do a lot on fifteen quid a week
There's nothing more to say
The system's crap
The only positive thing to do is turn my back
I thought it would make a fine project even more complete with the excellent "Reality Asylum" that is from the Crass album "Best Before" and I will reprint the lyrics here...
I am no feeble Christ, not me
He hangs in glib delight upon his cross, upon his cross,
Above my body, lowly me
Christ forgive, forgive?
Holy He, He holy, He holy?
Shit He forgives, Forgive? Forgive?
I? I? Me? I? I vomit for you Jesu
Puke upon your papal throne
Wrapped I am in the muddy cloud
Of hellish genocide
I have suffered for you
Where you have never known me
I too must die
Will you be shadowed in the arrogance of my death?
Your valley truth
What light pass those pious heights?
What passing bells for these in their trucks?
For you lord.
You are the flag-bearer of these nations
One against the other that die in the mud
No piety. No deity
Is that your forgiveness?
Saint. Martyr. Goat. Billy.
Forgive? Shit he forgives
He hangs upon his cross
In self-righteous judgment
Hangs in crucified delight
Nailed to the extend of His vision
His cross. His manhood. His violence. Guilt. Sin.
He would nail my body upon his cross
As if I might have waited for him in the garden
As if I might have perfumed His body
Washed those bloody feet
This woman that he seeks
Suicide visionary. Death reveller. Rake. Rapist.
Gravedigger. Earthmover. Lifefucker. Jesu.
You scooped the pits of Auschwitz
The soil of Treblinka is rich in your guilt
The sorrow of your tradition
Your stupid humility is the crown of thorn we all must wear.
For you. Ha. Master. Master of gore. Enigma. Stigma. Stigmata. Errata. Eraser.
The cross is the mast of our oppression.
You fly there, vain flag.
You carry it, wear it on your back, Lord. Your back.
Enola is your gaiety.
Suffer little children (to come unto me)
Suffer in that horror. Hirohorror. Hirrohiro. Hiroshimmer. Shimmerhiro.
Hiroshima. Hiroshima. Hiroshima. Hiroshima.
The bodies are your delight
The incandescent flame is the spirit of it
They come to you Jesu. To you
The nails are the only trinity
Hold them in your corpsey gracelessness
The image that I have had to suffer
These nails at my temple
The cross is the virgin body of womanhood
That you defile
In your guilt you turn your back
Nailed to that body
Lame-arse Jesus calls me sister
There are no words for my contempt
Every woman is a cross in filthy theology
He turns His back on me in His fear
His vain delight is that pain I bear
Alone He hangs. His choice. His choice
Alone. Alone. His voice. His voice
He shares nothing, this Christ
Sterile. Impotent. Fucklove prophet of death
He's the ultimate pornography
He. He. Hear us Jesus
You sigh alone in your cockfear
You lie alone in your cuntfear.
You cry alone in your womanfear.
You die alone in you manfear.
Alone Jesu, alone
In your cockfear. Cuntfear. Womanfear. Manfear.
Alone in your fear. Alone in your fear. Alone in your fear.
Your fear. Your fear. Your fear. Your fear. Your fear. Your fear. Your fear.
Warfare. Warfare. Warfare. Warfare. Warfare.
Jesus died for his own sins. Not mine.

I AM THE ARCHITECT
Walk In Regret
I AM THE ARCHITECT is a post rock band from Münster, Germany formed in 2007 by Johannes Thielsch (drums), Jakob Steffan (keyboard, samples), Marc Löhe (bass), Jörn krüßel (guitar) and Matthias Brinkmann (guitar). Their music takes influence from modern post rock bands, shoegaze and classical music. In May 2008 the band released their debut EP entitled "11" which they recorded, produced and mixed. The album was released for free download through the net label Lost Children though a physical copy can be ordered through the band's myspace. It was also known that a few months after their release Matthias Brinkmann parted ways from the band.
Lagrange Points is Mooncake’s first full length album. The CD, released in 2008, made the band popular among connoisseurs of genre both home and abroad. TheSillentBallet.com - the largest resource on instrumental music – published a rapt review of Lagrange Points having graded it 8 points out of possible 10
RED STARS THEORY
Hailing from Washington State, Red Stars Theory was a cooperative of musicians who began recording together in 1995. Comprised of James Bertram (guitar/vocals), Jeremiah Green (drums), Tonie Palmasani (guitar/vocals), and Jason Talley (bass). They released two EP’s and one full length in four years. Their first effort for Touch & Go, Life in a Bubble Can Be Beautiful, was released in 1999. The vocals are sparse, and mostly performed by guest Lois Maffeo. Seth Warren became a permanent member of the group after coming into the studio to record some violin tracks.
Novak were an experimental band from Birmingam around in the mid nineties, a layered expanse of percussion, guitars, vocals, flute and various lo-tech instruments.
THE DURITTI COLUMN
Durutti Column — the historical name comes from the Spanish Civil War — is essentially guitarist Manchester Vini Reilly (who began his career as a punk, in the late-'70s Ed Banger & the Nosebleeds), although he has used other musicians in the studio and tours with other players. In the late '80s, Reilly branched out, backing Morrissey (another Nosebleeds alumnus, as it happens) on his first solo record and working on an assortment of projects.
THE RADIO DEPT
The Radio Dept. was formed by Elin Almered and Johan Duncanson in 1995 who were in the school together in their early teenage. The name was taken from a gas station/radio repairer shop in Lund, Sweden which had a large sign with the name "Radioavdelningen, ("The Radio Department" in Swedish) hanging outside their shop.
Since 1995 members have been coming and going and at some points there has never really been a Radio Department at all.
Martin Carlberg and Johan Duncanson started playing together in 1998 and decided to use the name The Radio Dept. Since the band has done lots of gigs and lots recordings. The Radio Dept. recorded 4-tracks in friends' living rooms or at home, in smelly warehouse, in demo studios with blinking fluorescent lightning and at schools.
In the autumn of 2001 Lisa Carlberg and Per Blomgren (Bass & drums respectively), joined the band and they started rehearsing in the way bands so often do. Soon afterwards they were all joined by Daniel Tjäder, on the keyboards. Their recordings were sent to the music magazine Sonic and got a nice review. They were also on the free CD sampler that comes with the magazine. That's where Labrador Records discovered and learned to love the band. Now they're a part of Sweden's finest indie label.
THE SLEEP DESIGN
Hope Is The Dream Of A Soul Awake
From Alabama / Tennessee. Formed out of a passion for the beauty of God through sound, The Sleep Design attempts to shed light on the power of a Creator captured in rhythm. A love for jamming and a desire to stray from what pop culture has done to music inspires a band striving to mold melodies worthy of dreamers.
Kieran Hebden (born 1978, Putney, London) is a post-rock and electronic musician. Hebden first came to prominence as a member of the band Fridge before establishing himself as a solo artist under the moniker of Four Tet.
Hebden's music typically eschews the traditional pop song format in favour of a more abstract approach — his sound and melodies incorporate elements of hip hop, electronica, techno, jazz, and folk music with live instrumentation.
Alongside recording his own material, Hebden has also performed remixes for a number of artists including Aphex Twin, Anti-Pop Consortium, Bonobo, Beth Orton, Born Ruffians, Explosions in the Sky, Super Furry Animals, Radiohead, Manic Street Preachers, Matthew Dear, Sia, Nathan Fake, Bloc Party, Andrew Bird, Kings of Convenience, Battles, Juana Molina, Madvillain, The xx, Foals, and Black Sabbath, as well as producing two albums by psychedelic improvisational group Sunburned Hand of the Man. Hebden's recent output includes a number of improvisational works with the late jazz drummer Steve Reid and collaborations with both Burial and Thom Yorke.
SAD LOVERS AND GIANTS
Your Skin And Mine
SAD LOVERS & GIANTS play classy, alternative pop music. their multi-layered, many-faceted songs have been described by such words as ‘psychedelic’, ‘moody’, ‘exciting’, ‘wistful’, and ‘brooding’. Sweeping keyboards and dramatic piano; chugging, chiming, and eclectic guitars; inventive, melodic bass lines and steady drums with colourful embellishments all contribute to the depth of their sound. integrated into this are the vocals; sometimes confidential, sometimes forceful; always balancing the mood of the charismatic, often mysterious, lyrics. Like the music, the lyrics work on many levels. Just when you think you've unravelled the meaning of a song, another possibility presents itself…
Going somewhere new with music, and trying lots of different styles...
YOU ARE MY EVERYTHING
You are My Everything first started out as a side project to Reverend Big O. Singer Nicklas Nilsson and guitarist Jörgen Dahlqvist wanted to do music that were a little more up-tempo and rock compared with the slow and emotional music they played with the reverends.
But the idea with You are my everything grew and soon some ten-fifteen songs were recorded.
You are My Everything is indie rock at its best. Pumping bass, edgy rock guitars that colour the verses with quirky sounds and then, the chorus appears with noise and distortion. You are my Everything makes pop music with a rock attitude.
Or as they put it: Can you feel what it takes?
THIS WILL DESTROY YOU
This Will Destroy You, often abbreviated to TWDY, is an American post-rock band from San Marcos, Texas, formed in 2005. The band consists of guitarists Jeremy Galindo and Chris King, bass player and keyboardist Donovan Jones and drummer Alex Bhore. They typically compose lengthy atmospheric instrumental pieces, featuring layers of effects-laden guitar and a heavy usage of dynamics.
THE BROKEN FAMILY BAND
The Last Song
The Broken Family Band were a British rock band from Cambridge and London.
The band was formed in Cambridge, England by Steven Adams, Jay Williams, Micky Roman and Gavin Johnson in 2001, following the break-up of Adams and Williams’ indie rock band Hofman. Their musical style has variously been referred to as alt. country, country rock, new wave, and indie-rock (the latter term being favoured by the band).
February 2012: Chocologue
MARCH 2010: Shoeshine
Defining shoe-gaze can be tough sometimes. I think if we take some of the major bands we can identify that this genre does have it's own authentic sound. When deciding on the tracks for this mix, I could easily throw in Pale Saints and Ride, but when it came to other great songs, for example Milltown Brothers and Buffalo Tom, they couldn't be included because they just didn't have that aforementioned 'sound'... whatever it is, it's great and hopefully this selection will capture some old memories and re-invigorate the whole process... ENJOY!

Then I came upon this picture labelled "deadseaminerals" which I later thought would make a great name for a band too...
Well this new fusion has it's mood swings, from the soothing intro to the upbeat salvo from Buffalo Tom... along the way there are the soulful swirling guitars of APOF, sedated by the likes of Slowdive, Red House Painters and Mogwai...
This is not something that can be played just in the background... it requires deep thought and concentration - lie back and soak it in - a glass of Shiraz is optional but highly recommended!
Fusing all things indie across the last three decades, here's a sixteen tracker gleaned from various sources...

This is a mixture (pun intended) of gems that I was able to find (again) on the web, thanks partly to places like YouTube and people who have taken the time to upload many long-lost indie tunes.
Being someone who is (quite literally) still trapped in the 1980's, one of the aims of this website is to find and bring back some of the 'gone but never forgotten' bands for others to enjoy.
So here's the track-list, with as much info as I could find too!
